Added your site to my iGoogle page…kewl! What do you know about a service called hostmonster? My co-worker uses it for his personal web site and said that it has all inclusive pricing which includes Word Press for about $100/yr. Just wondered if you’d heard of it. I’d like to get the web site thing going while I’m home on medical leave next month.

Thanks for the comment. There are a lot of options out there, but before you move to spend money consider trying out WordPress.com. WordPress.com is different than WordPress.ORG because it does the hosting for you. The downside is you cant use your own domain name (yoursite.com). Using WordPress.com you would use something like yourbrand.wordpress.com. The free version is a great way to try before you buy.

Once you have your domain there are a lot of hosting options. Check out the site WordPress site for advice on which sites and plans best suit your needs.

    John,

You know you can use domain forwarding to have yourdomain.com point to yourblog.wordpress.com, right? Check out stephendill.com, that’s a WordPress site built on the wordpress.com platform. WordPress charges ~$7 a year for the service and will register the domain name for you.

allnewpubliceducation.com is another of my blogs on wordpress.com. The only drawback to using the wordpress.com platform used to be the relatively smaller number of widgets and themes available, as well as the lack of support for plugins. But with the recent upgrade of the software and the increased functionality of the basic theme, there is a lot more going for using wordpress.com for basic blogging. There still is an issue of backups, but third party solutions might soon cover that for us.

    Hope that helps,

    Stephen

    Hi Stephan,

Thanks for your thoughts. I host at Dreamhost piggybacking off a friends account so my cost is $0 (which fits nicely into my budget). You can access my blog directly at refford.com.
