Here are 5 Marketing Technology stories you might have missed. This week: impact of iOS5 on publishers, using email to drive WOM, and a double dose of social tactics.

1. Condé Nast digital subs soar 268% after iPad gets Newsstand

[link] Magazine publisher is attributing jump in subscriptions to iOS5 upgrade and addition of magazine reading app ‘Newstand”

MY TAKE: Newstand could become the iTunes store of magazines – that’s essentially what it is. The ease of use and home screen prominence is driving eyeballs and revenue. I’m currently interested in digital publishing companies like YuDu which can publish to iPad apps AND Newstand.

2. Word-of-Mouth: Email tactics power referral program with 111% ROI

[link] Case study of how a B2B company increased business by creating a powerful referral platform.

MY TAKE: A lot of B2B marketers I talk to seem flummoxed over how to activate current brand advocates and drive new business. This case study shows that is possible. Providing simple tools and mechanisms for current customers is the key. Have a compelling offer and KEEP IT SIMPLE.

3. When Consumers Tweet Complaints, Should Brands Respond?

[link] 50% of consumers expect a response from brands on twitter, yet only a third of complaints are answered.

MY TAKE: If your customer complaint phone rings, do you answer it? Why would twitter be any different?

4. Social Media Marketing: 9 tactics for B2B social channel advertising

[link] Interesting review of Advertising tactics based on Forrester research and social media consultant Jay Baer

MY TAKE: Worth a read if you don’t spend much time connecting social media tactics with ad spends.

5. Popular Social Media tactics

[link] Article refers to a study showing that marketers want to use more meaningful metrics to measure social media tactics success, yet such metrics are difficult to nail down if the data and appropriate attribution mechanisms aren’t in place.

MY TAKE: Truly surprised that exclusive content is used so broadly. Otherwise the tactics focus on integration and social promotion which is pretty straight forward. I wonder if respondents are doing things like creating blog posts from whitepapers and the like.

Here are 5 Marketing Technology stories you might have missed. A startup is out to kill captcha (yay!), iOS 5 can mung your iDevice and 3 other hot Marketing Technology stories.

1. Startup Replaces Captchas With Brand Messages for Better Web Advertising

[link] Solve Media is working to turn captcha (what is captcha?) into advertising opportunities. Solve Media is a start up so it may take time to work into the mainstream, but this is perfect innovation. Taking a necessary evil and turning it into an unique opportunity to make a positive brand impression.

My Take: DIE CAPTCHA DIE

2. iOS 5 features

[link] Here’s the feature list direct from the install

[link] Mashable does a nice job demonstrating the new features

My Take: After the install, 85 apps that I had purchased and/or downloaded had to be reinstalled. What a P.I.T.A. This website outlines what I’m seeing too. It looks like my data is still intact – thankfully.

WAIT A FEW DAYS TO UPGRADE!!!

3. Social Media Presence More Important Than Social Media Ads

[link] Social media marketers feel that having a presence on social sites is more important than advertising , but there are still challenges related to keeping a community running online.

Social media marketers reported that 48% of their budgets are used to attract new members to their pages, with 28% focused on social sites such as Facebook or Twitter, and 20% from off of these sites. On the other hand, 19% of budgets are used to keep current Facebook or Twitter communities engaged, and an additional 20% of budgets are spent on paid media to maintain existing fan bases.

My Take: Good for Marketers that recognize the value of engagement over push marketing (not that advertising is bad).

Listen –> Evaluate –> Engage

4. 7 in 10 CMOs Feel Unprepared for Data

Top Data Challenges Facing CMOs

[link] Marketing Charts provides some nice information from a IBM study of CMOs.

My Take: Digital Marketing is changing how brands interact with consumers. CMOs that who have not been super-vigilant need to play catch up. As I’ve said before (along with a great many others) Marketing needs to invest in serious data architects, analysts and statisticians if they want to make sense from all the data being created digitally.

5. Google debuts Dart, a new programming language for the web

[link] Dart is intended to be a replacement for JavaScript. Both faster and more dynamic.

My Take: Ummm…don’t have one, what do the programmers think? Hit me back in the comments.

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.refford.com/2011/10/5-marketing-technology-stories-you-might-have-missed-10-15-11/"></g:plusone>

Here are 5 Marketing Technology stories you might have missed.

This week: iPhone 5, LinkedIn Company pages, Google+ business profiles, smartphones and SMS campaigns.

1. This is Why Apple Didn’t Announce The iPhone 5

[link] It’s the hardware silly. It appears Apple wants the iPhone 5 to support 4G network speeds. The current available 4G chips use too much energy and are too large.

-

-

Anand Shimpi, a chip expert and CEO of Anandtech said:

A Qualcomm chip–the MDM9615–will likely appear in the second quarter of next year built on a more advanced chip manufacturing process. The MDM9615 comes in a smaller chip package and is voice enabled.

My Take: Although just a theory, this makes sense. Apple wants to raise the bar when it comes to smartphone technology. Releasing a new form factor without any benefits (above what is available in the iPhone 4S) doesn’t meet Apple’s high standard of excellence. In addition, we know the value Apple places on battery life. I’d say this means a release of iPhone 5 in the Spring.

2. Linkedin Updates To Company Pages

[link] LinkedIn added the ability to provide company updates on Company Pages.

My Take: I’ve always wondered who would win the enterprise. Facebook could have made a bid to do for businesses what it did for individuals. LinkedIn, who already has the top spot as THE professional social media network lacks social features and is still seen by many as a “resume site”. It still seems pretty wide open with LinkedIn having the edge for B2B and Facebook the edge for B2C. In listening to the Quick N’ Dirty Podcast, it seems like this update to LinkedIn could be the first in a series of changes to LinkedIn. Game on LinkedIn, Facebook and Google.

3. Google+ Lays the Groundwork for Business Profiles

[link] Google began promoting its support for brands. Up until recently, Google+ has been for individuals only and the platform has only been available to all users for a few weeks.

My Take: As a platform, Google+ has a lot to like. On Google+ brands can post messages, engage in real-time and reply to customer issues privately. Google+ still doesn’t have enough users to make it super compelling for users, but services continue to improve. Given the increased SEO benefits of being a Google property, brands must consider how/when/if to establish a presence on Google+.

4. What Smartphones Say About Their Users

[link] Frankly, this study my Prosper Mobile Insights validated what you might have suspected. Android and iPhone users use their smartphones for more media consumption, games and social media use than Blackberry users.

My Take: For the most part I tell people to invest in an awesome Android or iPhone – it can change your life for the better (seriously). However there are still those tech laggards that don’t really “get” why they need any of those fancy apps. For those people, the Blackberry is a step up.

5. Redbox Creative SMS Campaign Drives Results

[link] If you’re interested in how to execute a SMS campaign that generates business, review this case study in detail. Elements Redbox included: variable discount offers (gamification), scarcity, cross-channel (Facebook), and social outreach.

My Take: I’m very interested in SMS campaigns. Why? Open rates over 95% and it works on any kind of phone. Redbox built the blue-print for using new technology that many retail organizations should be using as a starting point.

Here are 5 Marketing Technology stories you might have missed. This week: two devices, Google Analytics, Marketing statisticians and how B2B Marketers can garner additional resources.

1. iPhone 5 announcement next week

On Tuesday Apple will announce their new iPhone(s). What makes the announcement so interesting is the secrecy and rumors surrounding the release. Check out this infographic on iPhone5 rumors [link]

My Take: A inMobi survey of iPhone users reported 41%plan to upgrade to the new iPhone 5.

Roughly 73 million iPhones have been sold worldwide. Assuming 1/2 are still in existence and the 41% number holds worldwide, that’s nearly 15 million people upgrading to the new iPhone when it releases. It will be interesting to see if Apple releases a iPhone 4S and what that does to Android sales.

2. Kindle Fire Released, not an iPad killer, but still pretty killer

Fire Specifications:

The Fire is no iPad and it doesn’t try to be. It’s hardware is well short of the iPad, but at roughly half the price, it is much more accessible and still retains key features most want.

7″ display

no camera

no microphone

Wi-Fi only

Just 8 GB of memory

$199

Interesting links about the Fire:

[link] Pictures up close with the Fire

[link] Video of the Fire

[link] TechCrunch is right, the Fire is a “sub-iPad” sort of like a iTouch for tablets

[link] The Fire may be part of a broader strategy. The device may be a loss leader but when paired with Amazon Prime it could help Amazon sell a lot more stuff.

[link] Silk browser is more than just a browser. It prefetchs content to increase load times and take the processing burden off the device. It’s ingenious but Amazon’s caching of content adds security concerns.

[link] 10 things we don’t know about the Fire

My Take: Will Amazon, only recently a hardware manufacturer, do what Samsung, Motorola and RIM could not? That is – release a tablet which garners significant market share?

Other android tablets tried to compete head to head but couldn’t. The Fire isn’t trying to be the same as the. IPad, it’s trying to be the best tablet for consuming content at an affordable price – it’s going after the market segment that would like an iPad but won’t shell out $500 to get one.

3. Google Analytics Gets Real-Time Data with New Enterprise Edition

[link] The new features (customer support, SLA and increased usability/functionality) will entice those using other analytics programs and GA basic users.

My Take: Google doesn’t have a strong history of enterprise support (although if anyone can do it..) but the features and benefits seem compelling. With a price tag is $150,000 annually I wonder how many organizations will jump up to Premium.

4. ‘Big Data’ Means Business Needs Mathematicians

[link] Just as in moneyball, statistics are becoming increasingly important, and it requires a special kind of NERD.

My Take: As Marketers migrate further into digital channels it needs more expertise on items such as: segmentation, integration, touch-point analysis, predictive modeling and attribution. Does your Marketing department have a statistician? Should it?

5. Marketing Research Chart: Top barriers to overcoming B2B marketing challenges

[link] Lack of resources is listed as the top challenge for B2B Marketer. This totally resonated with me.

My Take: How to overcome these challenges? Demonstrate contribution to revenue.

This is a review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. My perspective is from that of a Android mobile enthusiast. I’ve toyed with Apple products and found the hardware and software integration to be refined and the user interface to be straightforward. However, I’m not a huge fan of the closed architectures (more on that someday). I’m also reviewing the product as an enterprise device, not as a casual consumer so I did not pay special attention to the lifestyle aspects of playing music, reviewing pictures or it’s ereader capabilities.

I’ve been using the device for a few days and I’ve gotten a good sense of what it does well and not so well. It’s the first Android tablet to hit the market and at pace of change in mobile hardware, this review will be out of date in the hour it takes me to publish it.

The Galaxy Tab is very similar to android smartphones. In fact, really, it’s more smartphone than a tablet. If you’re familiar with Android you will have no problem getting around the Tab.

One for the ladies?

I’ve been trying to figure out who this device is for. Reviewing the Samsung website provides some clues - there are six faces on the webpage and all of them are female. Is the Galaxy Tab intended to be a lifestyle device? When compared to the somewhat geeky interface of the Motorola Droid and slightly more geeky Droidx interface, the Tab seems simplistic. Perhaps it’s a difference in design and style ethos between Motorola and Samsung, but the difference is striking. A friend of mine who recently converted from a Blackberry to a Droid commented on how small the font was and wondered if she could change it. Well, the font on the Tab is so BIG it reminds me of large print books intended for seniors and those with poor eyesight. Essentially, apps designed for smartphones with 3″ or 4″ displays are stretched to 7″ on the Tab. It’s great because the text is easy to read, but the space could be used to maximize user experience.

What worked:

Let’s clear up any confusion, it’s not a phone

The device is attractive and felt comfortable in my hands.

The Galaxy Tab is spry. I found it to be very responsive, easily on par with the iPad performance

The 7″ form factor makes sense as validated by the numerous ereaders on the market

Calendar app is pretty great. It’s appropriately built for the 7″ format and it easily combines my corporate and multiple Google calendars. My only gripe is I would have liked control over the colors of the calendars so I could distinguish one Google calendar from another.

Daily Briefing app pulls together: schedule, Accuweather, Yahoo stock watcher, AP news

Finally an Android that does screenshots without rooting!

Didn’t work for me:

Apps that are built for the 7″ format looked great (Daily briefing, WSJ, Calendar), but most apps are not written for the 7″ tablet. It’s the same problem the iPad faced when it first launched. The question is, will developers embrace the 7″ format. The answer is far from certain. This is the biggest challenge (and biggest opportunity) regarding UX.

Display auto dimming is mindnumbingly useless. It just never worked right.

Happened upon first use – battery went from ~40% to 0% in what seemed like a moment. The problem did not reoccur.

The order of the main buttons (menu, home, back, search) are in a different order than Motorola’s Droids. More of an annoyance, but some standards here would be nice.

Other editions of Android (Droid, Droidx) have an integrated inbox. The Galaxy Tab does not appear to have that functionality out of the box. Jumping between the corporate, Yahoo and Google e-mail app is an unnecessary problem.

In the end, my conclusion is the device is most suitable for lifestyle activities such as reading, listening and watching. The hardware really works well. The size seemed just right and not as awkward to use as a 10″ tablet. However, the lack of apps developed to take advantage of the 7″ screen is a major drawback.

Apple’s planned launch of their as yet unnamed tablet has gotten me thinking about what applications are going to prove to be the “killer app” for the new device.

Recalling a conversation I had with a friend our answer was: retail. The tablet has an opportunity to make a big impact on how retailers interact with their customers. Let’s look at how the device could change how customers interact with the retailers before, during and after the sale. For purposes of discussion I’ll use Home Depot as an example.

Normally before I head off to Home Depot I (hopefully) grab any returns I have and scratch out a list of items I need (along with measurements). Once I’m there wait in the excrutiatingly long line to make my returns and then I set off into the huge maze of football field length, sky-high aisles – hoping to find the products I need. Once I have the items I need I either stand in a long line with a human clerk or battle with the self-checkout system. In general, it’s a largely unpleasant experience that is replicated in some measure at many other big box stores (Walmart, Target, Lowes, Sports Authority, etc).

So what could a tablet do for the customer? Before I leave I pull up the Home Depot app on my Apple tablet and it reminds me that I have items in the garage ready to be returned. It tells me that with the holidays over, I may want to look at some new storage and organizations products to make better use of the space in my home. It has some routine DIY project videos along with step by step instructions in case I’m trying to fix a leaky faucet or install an eco-friendly rain bucket. Lastly it allows me to enter in the items that I need either by typing them in a tradition shopping list and/or by searching and selecting products from their catalog. Now I’m ready to head off to Home Depot.

Once I show up in the store, a Home Depot sales person greets me. They know that I have a lot of items on my list and that I’m working on a big kitchen redesign project. They also know how that I’ve spent a lot of money at their stores in the past 18 months and that they’d like to help me spend more of my money at Home Depot, not at a competitors store. As the sales person helps me find things, I’m scanning their UPC code and updating my total bill for the visit. With all my shopping done I say goodbye to the sales person and I’m ready to head to the door. My order is automatically charged to my credit card so I do not need to stand in line to check out. But before I get to the door I remember that I need some nails. I can’t remember where nails are in the store so I type in nails into my Home Depot tablet application and it provides walking directions to the hardware section of the store that has nails. I purchase those and I’m out the door.

Once home I am able to check the rewards points I earned, rate and review the products I purchased and mark any products for return in case they need to go back.

Apple’s tablet provides retailers, especially big-box retailers, some opportunities for innovation, to provide differentiated service and to build stronger bonds with the customer. The larger screen has the potential to be the tipping point that brings about several evolutions in software design and ultimately consumer experience.

What do you think the tablet’s killer app will be?
