Name that Tune
At home games they play a short song snippet as baseball players approach the batters box. Picking the right song is an important decision as a player. At a recent BNO (Boyz Nite Out) a few of us thought about what our song would be.
I came up with a few rules based on a convo with some of the guys that night. There are probably a good 8-12 rules, but I could only come up with 6.
Baseball song rules:
1. The song has to be recognizable. If people don't know the song any meaning the song is trying to convey will be utterly lost on them. This presents a considerable problem and limits the range of songs one can use significantly because (1) most of the songs people know and love are crap (IMNSHO) and (2) the decent songs are done to death.
2. The song has to be cool and awesome. Obviously. But since I tend to hate whatever is on the radio, this again makes things difficult.
3. The song should introduce an element of fear into the pitcher. The song can't be some namby-pamby P.O.S. It's got to be tough sounding. The pitcher has to be thinking, "whoa, I don't want to pitch inside on this guy, there's no telling what this madman will do."
4. Don't get fancy - keep it simple. Ideally the snippet starts at the beginning of the song. You can't go picking some verse from the middle of a song. That's trying too hard. You just need to pick an awesome song.
5. The song should be unique. Hopefully no one else in Major League baseball is using it and it uniquely represents you, the batter, in some way.
6. As Steve pointed out, it can't be a circus song. Although that would be pretty funny.
So what would my song be? Dunno, but I'm leaning towards the Mighty Mighty Bosstones', The Impression I Get. It's "my type of music" punk/ska/rock, it is somewhat recognizable and it has a unique, fun, start to the song. Okay. Yes, it's about being afraid to get AIDs tested, and maybe that isn't the message I'm working on, but still ---- cool song.
How about you. What's your song?

I still haven't come up with a good one. Offhand, I would choose "London Calling" by the Clash: it's recognizable, awesome, the beginning rocks, and it's not a circus song. Only bad thing is that it doesn't introduce an element of fear into the pitcher. (And I did hear Mark Bellhorn use it at a game once, but since he's not playing anymore I think I'm in the clear.)

Hmm, tough to put my finger on one, but as hokey as it may sound I think I'd go with the Sopranos opening theme song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUAtGy5TBI0

So this is what you talk about at Boys' Night?
"Time Bomb" by Rancid. Yeah, I'm a chick, but so what.
When I told Jamie, he immediately thought of the Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" which is pretty friggin' funny.
